1) Read and annotate two short stories: “The Masque of the Red Death” and “The Tell-Tale Heart” by Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849).

2) In a Word document, create a reading response. For both stories: summarize the plot with the story’s main events events, note the themes, and note the tones.

3) Below the plot, tone(s), and theme(s), write a separate analytical response that identifies one symbol in one of the stories that relates to a person’s fears or desires or any aspect of their psychology.

Word count: 200 words minimum, not including direct quotes or formatting text. Only your original writing counts toward the word count. Submissions that don’t meet the word count will lose points.
