Explain the significance of the term ‘homologous series

You are required to write an illustrated report which includes the sections outlined below. SECTION 1 Show that you understand the importance and the consequences of everyday uses of hydrocarbons by providing written explanation of the following: • The importance of everyday uses of organic compounds. • The environmental impact of global hydrocarbon consumption (increased CO2 & CH4, climate change and its consequences). You should use diagrams and/or comparison tables to support your commentary where appropriate. SECTION 2 Demonstrate that you understand hydrocarbon structure though completion of the areas outlined below. •

Explain the significance of the term ‘homologous series’. • Give a structural formula for any named alkane of at least 4 carbons. • Define chain isomerism. • Draw structures of isomeric alkanes. • Explain reactions of alkanes – combustion, chlorination, cracking including equations. • Explain why alkanes are relatively unreactive. You should use diagrams and equations to support your commentary where appropriate. SECTION 3 Demonstrate your understanding of chemical reactions and bonding in hydrocarbons through completion of the areas outlined below. • Draw structural formulas for any named alkene of at least 4 carbons, including geometrical isomers. • Describe the nature of the double bond. • Explain the difference in reactivity between an alkane and an alkene. • Explain why alkenes undergo addition reactions, giving suitable examples with balanced equations. • Explain how and why bromine water can be used to test for an alkene. • Explain the importance of polymerisation reactions of alkenes. You should use diagrams and equations to support your commentary where appropriate. GUIDANCE The report should be written using a recommended structure and format as outlined in the ‘Academic Writing Skills’ study materials. Conclusions and recommendations must stem from your findings. Relevant theory must be referenced where appropriate and you must provide a references list and bibliography.

You will need to include diagrams and/or drawings to support your commentary where required. On no account should you copy any images, diagrams or text from the study materials within your submission. The report should be a maximum of 2,000 words in length.
