Analyze the viability of the current “Way of War” concepts within the American military in navigating the contemporary era of strategic competition, particularly against near-peer challengers such as the People’s Republic of China. Apply your analysis to recommend specific adjustments to warfare theory or doctrine that should be prioritized or de-emphasized in the near term, aiming to fortify the underlying concepts shaping our strategic approach to this competition. Utilize an historical instances, strategy models, war’s intrinsic nature, Clausewitzian principles, war termination strategies, emerging technologies, and other pertinent course considerations.

While this may seem like an extremely lengthy and daunting task, it is intended that students return to the analysis they have already produced in their previous two essays to furnish the thinking, sourcing, and prose of the first part of the task- that of the viability of the “Ways of War” concepts. While earlier work may not fit one-to-one with the structure of the new essay students are producing, by this point, they should, at the very least, know the arguments involved and the sourcing (within and without the course) that they can call on to support this analysis. As such, the first half of the essay prompt should be a significantly easier task, thanks to the coursework already achieved.
